HOME REFRESH | MASTER BATHROOM
I knew all along that my end goal was to completely refresh our entire kitchen eventually. Seeing as how I’d never come close to attempting this, I thought I may as well practice on the master bathroom as that could use a nice makeover too! If you take one thing away from reading this… practice, practice, practice! Get some practice on a smaller area first, preferably one that all your guests won’t be seeing. I learned SO many things doing the bathrooms that when the time finally came to do the kitchen I was a pro. Okay, maybe I just felt like a pro. You decide.
The plan was to not only paint the cabinets ourselves, but also update the hardware, swap out the sinks, faucets, lighting + mirrors before bringing in the big guns to replace the countertop with and demo the outdated ceramic tile flooring in favor of Luxury Vinyl Plank to match the flooring being installed downstairs. First things first, cabinet doors needed to come off to be painted, as well as the drawers. Excuse the clutter under the cupboard, I had zero plan to move any of it, a girl’s still gotta live!
Mistake number one: I thought it would be best to give the cabinets a light sanding. Wrong. That created a texture I just couldn’t quite overcome. Lesson learned. But I did manage to get two coats of paint on all the drawer fronts, cabinet doors and vanity exterior. I decided to go with solid white cabinets to freshen and brighten the bathroom up. I’ve always wanted smooth, clean white crisp cabinets that I could mix up with any color decor. This took me two full days to complete and other than my learning curve, it wasn’t that bad!
Once the cabinets were painted + reattached it was super easy to update the old hardware with oil rubbed bronze, which I had luckily measured to fit exactly, yay me!! Next up, the massive mirror was removed + since I wanted two smaller mirrors in its place I needed to paint, which of course, meant painting the whole bathroom a similar shade since I didn’t have an exact match paint. I just love painting walls. Said no one ever.
The photo below shows just how beautiful that lovely tile countertop goes with the white painted cabinets. Hard pass.
And …. done! I love it! All in all, including the time it took for the flooring (which was mostly demo of the tile) the whole project probably took about a week. Not bad since we literally took it from a 2000 builder grade bathroom to an updated fresh + clean master retreat! And, yes, the tub was redeemed to its former glory once the displaced throne went back to its point of origin!
